Lived Experience

Last week I attended the Learning from Lived Experience event hosted by Cornwall Mind in partnership with Cornwall NHS and the Lived Experience Network. I have had my own experiences of seeking support for my own and family's mental health, and countless students over the years as a Mental Health Advisor in education, so it was refreshing to be in a space where professionals and people who have experienced the system are equals.

The talks, conversations and interactive activities facilitated by the wonderful Experts by Experience were thoughtful and inspiring (and I got to play with play dough!).
What stood out most - aside from the most colourful lunch I have EVER seen - was the atmosphere where I felt welcomed, valued, heard and understood. Shout out to the fidget ring which matched my trousers, having tools there to help attendees feel comfortable is 10/10.

At various points in the afternoon I was reminded of the meaning behind my counselling name, Klewes – a Cornish word connected to feeling and hearing. In both counselling and lived experience work, truly listening to people's stories is hugely important. If you have any experiences of accessing counselling that I can learn from I am all ears, please feel free to drop me a message!
Thank you to everyone who shared, contributed and helped create such a meaningful space today. I left with fire in my belly and grateful to have been part of it
