Something you’ve learned from being a counsellor

Since my previous role, where I was firmly wearing an "advisor" hat, I've known that people don’t need “fixing”. Since becoming a counsellor, the fact people need space has been even more clear.
Space during the ups and downs to: feel without being judged and to hear their own voice underneath the noise of expectations, guilt, and old stories.
When someone feels genuinely heard, something shifts. Not because I’ve given them the “right” answer, but because their own truth has finally been given space to just be.

Lets take these hills to demonstrate my thinking. People don’t need to be dragged up the hill or be told the quickest route. They need someone who can walk beside them, match their pace, and offer a steady place to pause and breathe.
Healing often begins in the moments someone feels safe enough to be exactly who they are. On the hill, this would be where someone finally feels free to stand still, catch their breath, and find their own direction again.
I remind myself this before every session, as its a reminder for me of the old story I told myself that I needed to rescue everyone, when that simply is not true
